Glover on Living Colour’s Return With “The Chair in the Doorway”

Glover on Living Colour’s Return With “The Chair in the Doorway”

When Living Colour returned out of hibernation with their 2003 reunion release, Collideøscope, fans probably assumed the group would return to their previous record-tour-record cycle. But this didn’t prove to the case, as the band — singer Corey Glover, guitarist Vernon Reid, bassist Doug Wimbish and drummer Will Calhoun — has subsequently focused solely on live work. But that’s all about to change with the release of the group’s fifth full-length, The Chair in the Doorway, on September 15th.

“It’s been a long time,” Glover tells Rolling Stone. “We’ve been putting this thing together for a number of years now, off and on. Between gigs, soundchecks, going to several studios, cataloging it and deciding what we were going to use. We really got focused on it last year. We were playing in Europe, and we took a break and went into a studio in Prague [Sono Studios]. That was really good, because we had already been playing, and we had gotten into that groove of playing together. When we got into the studio, we were in a really good place.”

“Burned Bridges,” “DecaDance” and “Behind the Sun” prove the classic Living Colour sound is back on The Chair in the Doorway, which is also a much more focused from a songwriting standpoint than its predecessor. “I think we were a little more concerned about what needed to be on this record, and what needed to be said,” Glover says.

Just don’t ask Glover to compare The Chair in the Doorway to such earlier Living Colour classics as Vivid or Time’s Up. “I can’t compare it — I wouldn’t even try to compare it. It would do a disservice to any of the other Living Colour records. Each one has its own distinct sort of thing about it, and its own idea that it’s trying to put across.”

With it now being nearly nine years since Living Colour members buried the hatchet and resuscitated the band (that lay dormant for a spell during the mid-late ’90s), Glover points out that his mates are still seeing eye to eye. “We get along great — this is the best we’ve felt about each other in a long time. Back in the day, the animosity — whether it was real or imagined — sort of affected everything. Sometimes it was positive, sometimes it was negative. I think we have a genuine appreciation of what we are and who we are, and understand each other.”

So what’s next for Living Colour after The Chair in the Doorway drops? “We’re going on the road. We start in September with North America, then we go to South America, then Europe, and we’ll see happens from there. Right now, this is the most important thing to me.”

New Album THE CHAIR IN THE DOORWAY Set For Release on September 15

Living Colour have announced North American tour dates in support of their new album The Chair In The Doorway. The highly anticipated 28-date run will be bookended by performances at The Highline Ballroom in New York City, as they appear August 10 opening for The Roots at their weekly Tuesday night jam session and then again on October 30 for their own headline performance. In between, the band will hit 19 states around the U.S., including a return to The Key Club in Los Angeles on September 24, The Regency Grand Ballroom in San Francisco on September 25 and The Double Door in Chicago on October 4. They'll cross the border for a show in Toronto at Lee's Palace on October 3.

The Chair In The Doorway, set for release September 15 on Megaforce Records, was recorded at Sono Studios just outside of Prague in the Czech Republic. Renowned producer Count (Galactic, Lyrics Born, No Doubt) was onboard to helm the sessions, while Ron St. Germain (U2, Mos Def, Muse) mixed the album. The 11-track collection is Living Colour's most personal collection of songs yet with razor sharp lyrical observations and kinetic jams that seamlessly weave elements of metal, funk and soul. Vernon Reid described the album as, "an unintentional concept record about life and how we are all in this thing together."

Living Colour formed out of New York City in the mid-'80s. Their incendiary performances at CBGBs became the stuff of legend. The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger, who witnessed one of these shows, was so impressed that he insisted upon producing a demo for the fledgling band and later helped them score a record deal. Living Colour's debut album Vivid went double platinum and garned the band a Grammy Award. Around this same time, the band's founder, Vernon Reid, helped form the Black Rock Coalition to help create opportunities for African-American musicians playing rock music in a largely segregated music business. The results of these efforts paired with Living Colour's own success helped pave the way for artists like Ben Harper, Rage Against The Machine and TV On The Radio. In 2007, Living Colour's hit song "Cult Of Personality" was selected for Guitar Hero III. The game has gone onto sell over 14 million copies, introducing the band to a new generation of fans.

On June 28th Corey Glover hosted a fundraiser for NY2NO at Temple M. Vernon Reid, V. Jeffrey Smith, Booker King, Howard Alper, Dean Bowman, Kaila Paulino, and Will Calhoun joined him. If you were there, you know I’m not exaggerating when I say it was one for the books.

On July 31st Corey Glover, frontman for multiple Grammy Award winning rock band Living Colour will host another solidarity jam, this time unplugged. This acoustic set will also feature some very special guests. We promise another evening of impeccable musicianship – a night which will make you think hard about the world and your own inner life, while having a stomp down, sweaty good time!

All proceeds from this event will go directly to financial aid for participants in NY2NO’s summer projects. Financial aid covers the cost of food, shelter and transportation.

Katrina was nearly four years ago. We all watched it go down on TV. Some of us saw Spike Lee's 'When the Levees Broke.’ We watched busloads of pets being evacuated while people waited for days atop their roofs, left to die. Our newscasters on the screen told us white people were salvaging, while black people were looting. We all saw it happen. What most of us aren’t aware of is how much devastation remains, particularly in the Lower 9th Ward. A historical neighborhood equivalent to NYC’s Harlem, which was hardest hit with over 30 feet of toxic floodwaters. The Lower 9th had the highest rate of African-American home ownership in the country. Those who survived were displaced; families were separated in ways eerily reminiscent of slavery. Survivors are still scattered throughout, as far away as Alaska with no means of returning. Families are still searching for each other. Almost FOUR years later.

NY2NO is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. They are a youth-led, consensus-based organization creating a network of young people interested in organizing and mobilizing across New York City. NY2NO works in solidarity with those most affected by the social, racial, and economic inequalities in both New York and New Orleans. Through this, the youth break down barriers and work together to combat racism and classism and help move us towards a more egalitarian society.
