Living Colour: Keeping The Music Alive
audio should be available around 7pm EST (click title/link for direct link and audio stream)
December 6, 2009 - One of the most recognizable guitar riffs recorded in America belongs to Living Colour. The band's 1988 hit "Cult of Personality" regularly makes "100 Greatest Songs Ever Written" lists and won the group Grammy Awards. But what made Living Colour unique was that all of its members were black in a genre — hard rock — dominated by white musicians.
For a time, the band broke up, but it regrouped in 2000. Spearheaded by guitarist Vernon Reid and vocalist Corey Glover, Living Colour's latest album, The Chair in the Doorway, is an unapologetic homage to American hard rock, with a bluesy twist.
In an interview, NPR's Guy Raz wonders if "Cult of Personality" was a mixed blessing. Written in one session and performed at CBGB just a night later, Vernon Reid says the song has had an amazing life.
"Many artists have a rueful feeling towards their most popular song," Reid says. "I actually still love the song, 'Cult of Personality.' It's really so much more relevant now then it was then."
Living Colour doesn't sell out arenas anymore. The band plays small clubs and sells fewer records. But, compared to the literal mobs of attention in those early days, Glover says he welcomes the change.
"What I'm doing and how it's going right now is so much better for me, because there is no pressure," Glover says. "There is no fishbowl experience."
The years have also given the band wisdom. With age, Reid says "the music becomes even more crucial as a motivating factor." For Reid, if the music isn't the center, it falls away — he says he's seen it happen with many older musicians.
In this interview, Glover talks about the surreal experience of recording "Not Tomorrow," a song about his dying mother. The band also weighs in on being an all-black hard-rock group in a white-dominated genre.
"It didn't start with us," Reid says. "It won't end with us."

Living Colour in Hamburg
.jpg)
In attendance at tonight's performance at Fabrik in Hamburg was a group of Living Colour fans who together chartered a bus and traveled from hours away to ensure that they did not miss this local performance. Also in attendance were local Megaforce distributors, Christina Schepers and Doris Wehser along with local journalist Kay Hensel.
Much Love to Metro Cafe and Brno, CZ!
Thanks also to everyone at the Metro Cafe who made the evening memorable like Lucie whose warmth and hospitality capped the evening off with a private meal at a local restaurant.

Fragile Families by Vernon Reid
That time span contains Promethean struggle, astonishing good luck, brotherly communion, hard won triumph, communication breakdown, line-up changes, personal conflict, headache, heartache, tears, rage, hysterical laughter, the birth of wonderful children, the death of wonderful parents, strange vibrations, new technologies, never-speaking-to-each-other-again moments, wrong moves, right decisions, painful realizations, anguish and forgiveness.
Any band that lasts more than a decade is a thing of wonder. Rock bands are, by and large, fragile families of choice, as well as daring soldiers of fortune, choosing to be a band of brothers (and sisters where applicable) without the familial bonds of DNA to enforce a sense of relatedness. It’s hard work and it’s a continual process of renewal without which it can be impossible to continue when a fundamental rupture occurs.
A fundamental rupture is that shock to the system which forces sudden drastic, unwanted change. The death, catastrophic illness or sudden departure of a bandmate is perhaps the hardest event for a group to recover from. If the band doesn’t crumble under the crushing weight of its grief, it usually continues in diminished form—everyone aware of the gaping hole onstage, its mojo gone. INXS, Queen, Van Halen and Little Feat are prime examples of bands struggling and coping with disruptive departures.
On the other hand, such existential hardship can serve to reenergize a band after the last teardrop dries. The Stones managed to rally after the death of its founder Brian Jones. Pink Floyd was inspired to create some of its most groundbreaking work when its leader Syd Barrett was hospitalized with debilitating mental illness. In one of the most heroic turns, the band Def Leppard remained loyal to their drummer Rick Allen after he lost his arm in a horrific car crash. Faith No More didn’t miss a beat when switching frontmen from Chuck Mosley to Mike Patton—having success with both of them. In Living Colour’s case, the departure of Muzz Skillings was a weird unraveling of trust and friendship. The arrival, however, of the amazing bassist Doug Wimbish catapulted us back to work on our third full-length album, Stain.
Another serious challenge to the survival of a rock band is the fickle cultural ecology surrounding it. In a way, the harsh and unforgiving nature of the zeitgeist is the great equalizer. The rich and the popular are not to be spared. Those once in vogue can find themselves on the outside looking in, in short order. The once hot career can find itself cool to the touch. The hiring of top engineers, the best musicians, the most professional arrangers and successful producers and the hefty weight of a multinational corporation guarantee nothing.
As hard as we worked on the album, and as good as we believed it was, the sales for Stain were a disappointment. The commercial failure of an album is often the death knell of the rock and roll band—a fraught and emotional time of Hunter S. Thompson-esque fear and loathing. The hardest fact of the rock and roll life is that the love that you get from audiences is conditional by necessity. We amuse, we entertain, we provoke, we rock—but in time, people’s tastes change, their minds change and people vote with their feet out of the back exit. It’s not personal, and yet it feels that way at the time of the turning away.
Yet some folks really take a band and its music into the deepest part of themselves. The songs become their personal soundtrack. Their love for these musicians is boundless—driving for hours to get to a small show in an obscure town, passionately defending the band against detractors and trolls of all stripes. Fans like these are what keep a band going through the worst times. The people who never stopped believing in us often reminded me of how Living Colour’s music gave the band a sense of possibility and a step past hope. The very existence of our new album The Chair In The Doorway is an embodiment of that possibility.
----------------------------------------------------
The Chairway In The Doorway, Living Colour’s fifth
album, will be released on September 15th on Megaforce Records.

Relix - Living Colour The Chair In The Doorway review
OCTOBER 2009
Living Colour
The Chair in the Doorway
MEGAFORCE
After a decade of inactivity, Living Colour, the groundbreaking all-Black metal-funk, etc. hybrid led by guitarist Vernon Reid and vocalist Corey Glover, returned in 2003 with CollideĆscope. That album, like 1993’s Stain, retained the ferocity and braininess of the group’s early work, but alienated some older fans who saw its adventurism as too much of a departure. Another break followed—filled with rare and live releases—and now comes The Chair in the Doorway. This time, everyone should be happy. From the crackling soul-funk of “Bless Those” to the raging lead-off track “Burned Bridges,” the psychedelic surf of “Out of Mind” to the sinister “Method,” the quartet corrals its innovative urges into a set of tightly constructed new tunes that go easy on the experiments but don’t seek to resurrect the ‘80s either.

Rolling Stone Review : Living Colour - The Chair In The Doorway
"It's a bad time/ To be out of your mind," singer Corey Glover cautions in "Out of Mind," a brute-metal warning about staying sharp for battle on Living Colour's most focused record since their 1988 debut, Vivid. To these black-rock fighters, apocalypse is colorblind. The greed and fallout in Vivid's "Open Letter (To a Landlord)" still run deep in the enraged crunch of "DecaDance" and "Hard Times." But "Bless Those (Little Annie's Prayer)" is a hot ball of faith: Guitarist Vernon Reid slices across Doug Wimbish and Will Calhoun's porch-party strut with sacred-steel licks. Reid's playing is a thrill throughout; his solos sound like a mind blown wide but never to pieces.

Living Colour release 'The Chair In The Doorway'
Cult Of Praise For Living Colour's The Chair In The Doorway
In Stores and Online TODAY, September 15
Appearing Monday, September 21, on LATE NIGHT WITH JIMMY FALLON
Living Colour return with The Chair In The Doorway, their first release in six years in stores and online today from Megaforce Records. The NYC-based band, featuring Corey Glover, Vernon Reid, Will Calhoun and Doug Wimbish, kicked off a 65-date world tour on September 1, and are earning early praise from the road for their powerful live shows and hard-hitting new album:
"The group has remained taut and kinetic, a rock furnace." - Hartford Courant
"More vivid than Vivid...Living Colour sound effortless...truly vivid, diverse and barbed." - Philadelphia Inquirer
"Living Colour's first CD in years strikes a more personal note..onstage they are as electric as ever." - Boston Globe
"Welcome back, Living Colour. Your music still shines bright." - Washington Post
"From the crackling soul-funk of 'Bless Those' to the raging lead-off track 'Burned Bridges,' the psychedelic surf of 'Out Of My Mind' to the sinister 'Method,' the quartet corrals its innovative urges into a set of tightly constructed new tunes." - Relix
"Living Colour has restored my faith in the Church of Rock" - Phillyist.com
"The Chair in the Doorway cements the band's identity as one of the best American rock bands of the past two decades." - MetalSucks.com
Living Colour are set to perform the record's lead track, "Behind The Sun," on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon next Monday, September 21. Inspired by post-Katrina New Orleans, the song's resonant lyrics hold true to Living Colour's history of taking a firm stance against social and racial injustice.
The Chair In The Doorway was recorded at Sono Studios just outside of Prague in the Czech Republic. Renowned producer Count (Galactic, Lyrics Born, No Doubt) was onboard to helm the sessions, while Ron St. Germain (U2, Mos Def, Muse) mixed the album. The 11-tracks are Living Colour's most personal collection of songs yet with razor sharp lyrical observations and kinetic jams that seamlessly weave elements of metal, funk and soul. Vernon Reid described the album as, "an unintentional concept record about life and how we are all in this thing together." He goes on to call the band's storied past and present, "multi-dimensional--a unique American story about race and political activism in music and aging and we invite people to be part of that story."
Watch and listen to Living Colour perform "Behind The Sun" on WNYC Soundcheck.
The band recently visited NY's WXRP for a performance chat with Matt Pinfield In the Morning. Listen here.
