"Tony Williams Lifetime Tribute"
featuring JACK BRUCE, VERNON REID, JOHN MEDESKI & CINDY BLACKMAN
December 14, 2008 Motion Blue - Yokohama, Japan
December 15-19, 2008 Blue Note - Tokyo, Japan
"When Vernon Reid suggested we might have a tribute concert for the music of Tony Williams Lifetime I jumped at the chance to take part. One of the greatest highlights of my musical career was playing with Tony's amazing band. I am so looking forward to re-visiting this music especially with such great musicians as Vernon, John and Cindy. Together I believe we can rekindle the spirit of a more joyous and optimistic era." - JACK BRUCE
This idea really started a long time ago with the tragic untimely death of mr. Williams. He was and remains a great hero to many of us;not just for his incredible mastery of the drums, but for his intensely visionary gifts as a composer and songwriter. I've had the great fortune to work with the extraordinary bassist Jack Bruce of Cream, and during a tour with him started to chat about Tony Williams and Lifetime and their close personal relationship. I thought of Cyndi Blackman, a true devotee of mr Williams whose work in that regard is not as well known as her long association with the rock star Lenny Kravitz. Cyndi is a gifted composer in her own right and as such has real insight into Mr. Williams, not only as a master percussionist, but as a creator as well. John Medeski is a keyboard artist of true originality, whose organ work evokes the mysterious power of the vastly under appreciated Larry Young whose moody swing and avant energy was a powerful force within the ensemble.
John McLaughlin has been a major influence on me as a guitarist, mainly from the later Mahavishnu period, seeds of which were sown in Tony Williams Lifetime as well as his tenure with the great Miles Davis.
This project is a way to celebrate a great unique voice at the nexus of Jazz and Rock; a true original.
tony william's lifetime was always one of my favorite bands. even before i ever imagined that i would be playing organ or electric keyboards.
over the years, since tony left the planet, vernon and i have been talking about doing this project to honor one of the pioneering ensembles of modern of electric music. somehow everything has finally come together to let it happen.
i love playing with vernon, cindy blackman is one of my favorite drummers (we have been trying to find a way to play together the past few years), and jack bruce is jack bruce, a legend. i am very excited. - john medeski
Tony Williams is my drum hero!!! I love all of his work and especially, the ground breakingly innovative LifeTime. I am so happy that Vernon wanted to celebrate it because The Tony Williams Lifetime influenced not only Miles Davis but Mahavishnu, Return To Forever and the next 3 decades of electric music to the present. Tony introduced me Jack Bruce briefly at the One Night At Blue Note concert in NYC.... I love his playing and was Hoping to get a chance to play with him and to do so in tribute to Tony is the ultimate!!!
Vernon Reid is a modern day guitar hero! His musicianship and vision are incredible and playing with him is always amazing! Super chops, super intelligence and super concept! I love all of that !
John Medeski is a great musician and I've been wanting to play with him for a long time! His sound is firery, his energy high and he's not afraid to take chances,....
I am completely happy and honored to give tribute to Tony Williams with such greats as Vernon, Jack & John! - Cindy Blackman
<Commentary from JOHN SCOFIELD>========
I played on a few concerts and recordings with Tony in the 70’s and 80’s.I was always thrilled to perform with him because he is one of my musical idols. The first time I played with him, in N.Y. at “SWEET BASIL” in ’77… I was so impressed with the sound he got from his cymbals and drums…..It was so much richer and deeper than any other drummer I had heard!!
“Lifetime” was very experimental and free…but using electric guitar and organ…Different from acoustic music. McLaughin and Young made incredible sounds using electricity! This was very related to sonic innovations in Rock music・・・.They were among the first to combine JAZZ and ROCK and ELECTRONICS!

Iconic Guitarist and Revolutionary Musician Vernon Reid Joins the Rock House Family
First ever instructional Products From One of Rock's Most Iconic Musicians
(West Haven, CT., December 3, 2008) – Rock House, the leader in music instruction, announced today that legendary Guitarist Vernon Reid has signed on to product several instructional products with Rock House. Vernon is best known as the founding member and driving force of the iconic rock band Living Colour. He has guided the band through a remarkable career. Among the highlights: a double platinum-selling debut album Vivid, released in 1988; its gold-certified successor, Time's Up, released 1990; two consecutive Grammy Awards in the category of Best Hard Rock Performance; Two MTV Music Video Awards, opening for the Rolling Stones' 1989 "Steel Wheels" tour; appearing on the first Lollapalooza tour and most recently having their song "Cult of Personality" included in the video Game Guitar Hero 3. He is also listed at 66 on Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarist of all time."
Reid reinvigorated hard rock with shots of soul, jazz and hip-hop. Reid's solos embraced the free-form abstraction of his early days as a jazz player, but they flexed enough muscle to bowl over any Metallica fan." Rolling Stone Magazine
"During the 1980s, rock had become completely segregated and predictable, Vernon and Living Colour helped break down the doors by the end of the '80s, leading to a much more open-minded musical landscape that would eventually pave the way for future bands like Rage Against the Machine, Sevendust and many others." quoted Joe Palombo, Executive Director of Rock House. Production is scheduled to start in the spring of 2009, no release date has been set yet, but it is likely to be some time in the Fall of 2009.
Since the formation of Living Colour, Vernon has appeared as a guest guitarist on the records of a many diverse artists: Jack DeJohnette, Public Enemy, B.B. King, The Ramones, Mariah Carey, Mick Jagger, Tracy Chapman, Eye & I, Family Stand, Carlos Santana, and others. He has also composed music for the Marlies Yearby Dance Co., and choreographer Ralph Lemon, scored the music for the film "Fresh Kill" and Johnny Nmemonic, has also composed "Here", a piece for Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company.

Vernon: "I did a press junket for CollideØscope with Corey and whenever something was going wrong Corey would always say "the chair in the doorway". It was just one of these things he would say and I looked at him and said 'you know that thing you always say, that's going to be the title of our next album.' I don't know what that means but that's it. What I like about "The Chair In The Doorway" is that it is a concrete image and a very real thing but……Why is there a chair in the doorway? What does it mean? It's completely abstract, while being a contract, a physical manifestation of what it is." is

Black Rock: An Oral History

Black Rock: An Oral History
In the 1980s, a brotherhood of bands led by Fishbone and Living Colour refused to let their race dictate the style of music they played. Here's how they splashed onto the scene, how they struggled to stay afloat, and what they're doing now.
By David Browne 10.23.08 5:12 PM
In 2008, indie-rock bands with black members virtually amount to a genre unto themselves; think TV on the Radio, Black Kids, Bloc Party, the Dirtbombs, Apollo Heights, Earl Greyhound, and Dragons of Zynth, among many others. But that prolificacy was hardly the case 20 years ago, when four African American New York musicians called Living Colour, part of a local movement dubbed the Black Rock Coalition, released their first album, Vivid. Their goal: to assert that a new generation of black musicians could play more than just R&B and hip- hop, and could rock the house as much as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Arthur Lee, and Jimi Hendrix had done before. Now most of the scene's bands are either footnotes or forgotten. But in light of their heirs, it's worth looking back on the successes, struggles, and legacy of '80s black rockers. This is their story, in their own words.
VERNON REID (guitarist, Living Colour): I was born in London and my parents are from the Caribbean, so there were all these crosscurrents. My mom was a fan of the Dave Clark Five and British Invasion music.
CHUCK MOSELY (lead singer, Faith No More, 1983–1988): I was adopted and mixed. I never really fit into anything. But having Creem magazine and hearing the Ramones when I was 14 completely blew me away. The whole alienation aspect of punk spoke to me -- I was already alienated.
ANGELO MOORE (lead singer, Fishbone): I lived in a white neighborhood [in Los Angeles]. In the house we had soul food, black music, and black TV shows like Sanford and Son. Outside of that, I'd go to school with all the white boys and hear Led Zeppelin. "Stairway to Heaven" was one of my favorite songs, and "Strawberry Fields Forever," too. When my family traveled across country, we'd listen to Billy Joel: "Sing us a song, piano man!" It had energy.
RICK SKATORE (bassist, 24-7 Spyz): Black music had a different presence [in the '60s and '70s]. It was rare that you saw a black act on television. But I remember watching A Hard Day's Night as a child, and there were four guys with instruments and girls were screaming. I was like, "Wow, I can make girls scream if I get one of those?"
JIMI HAZEL (guitarist, 24-7 Spyz): I got branded as "odd" early on. In junior high in 1976, my friend and I were the only black kids in school who had the Kiss logo on our jackets. After Jimi Hendrix's death, I began tying scarves around my leg and head in his honor, and some kids picked on me.
COREY GLOVER (lead singer, Living Colour): My parents were playing Santana and Return to Forever in our house in Crown Heights [Brooklyn], and as a way to rebel, I turned to the rock station. I found Thin Lizzy, Jeff Beck, and Led Zeppelin. Then I saw [black actor] Carl Anderson in Jesus Christ Superstar. He was singing rock'n'roll. That changed my whole thing.
GREG TATE (author, musician, Black Rock Coalition cofounder): You had this incredible period between '69 and '75 of all these black and multi-ethnic rock bands: Earth, Wind & Fire; Funkadelic; War; Mandrill....

Living Colour- CBGB Omfug Masters: August 19, 2005 The Bowery Collection - REVIEW

Following hot on the heels of Terror’s gig recorded at CBGB’s MVD Audio have unleashed Living Colour at CBGB’s. The show is captured live in the raw without studio overdubs or trickery. This is the band live and in your face. Direct from the CBGB soundboard! Living Colour’s 12 track set on August 19th, 2005 is nothing short of brilliant. Having not heard the band for many moons I’m reminded by this disc just how fucking phenomenal a band they really were. If you’ve never heard Living Colour grab this as a sampler of their greatness, unlike most live albums this is truly the real deal. The standout tracks are; “Funny Vibe,” “Open Letter To Landlord,” “Love Rears It’s Ugly Head” and “Cult Of Personality.”

Yohimbe Brothers Play North Star Bar (review)

Yohimbe Brothers play North Star Bar
By David R. Adler
For The Inquirer
In torn jeans and fedora, guitarist Vernon Reid faced a sparse crowd Saturday at North Star Bar, but he played with undiminished energy. This was Yohimbe Brother Number One.
Across the stage, DJ Logic (Jason Kibler) manned turntables, shoring up the rhythms, layering samples and effects. According to the band introductions, this was also Yohimbe Brother Number One.
No hierarchies here.
With two albums (Front End Lifter and The Tao of Yo) and a new DVD (Freedom Now) to their credit, the Yohimbe Brothers have taken stock of crumbling genre barriers in their effort to crumble them a bit more.
Although the project involves a full band, Reid and Logic are co-instigators, with eclectic resumes and an interest in soldering heavy metal, hip-hop, dub, funk, dance music and ethereal electronica into something personal and relentlessly current. It's a junkyard aesthetic, girded by an ironic sort of precision.
At North Star, bassist Jared Nickerson and drummer Don McKenzie brought hammer-like force and focus to shifting beats. On keyboard and laptop, Leon Gruenbaum fleshed out the harmony but also joined Logic in an abstract, textural role.
Maya Azucena, the statuesque front woman (and self-described Yohimbe Brother sister), was in confident voice, swerving from the rapid-fire rhythmic punch of "Shine for Me" to the shout-along chorus of "More From Life" and even the Spanish-language reggae of "No Pistolas." Gaston, from the rap group Us3, broke in with rhymes on several numbers.
The songs had a certain improvisational give-and-take, giving Reid ample opportunity to shred on guitar, injecting tart blues phrases, metal hyperspeed picking and jazz-inflected atonality into the picture.
Even if small, the crowd was dedicated and ready to dance, meeting the question "How you doin' out there?" with determined, affirmative shouts.
With the band Living Colour, Reid came as near to rock stardom as a disciple of Ornette Coleman and James Blood Ulmer probably ever could. Logic has pursued an analogous course, bringing turntables into jazz and rock environments (Medeski, Martin & Wood, Uri Caine, Wallace Roney). The common denominator? Pushing black music idioms into unforeseen, experimental spaces, a process somehow radical and traditional.

Did you purchase a Vernon Reid guitar pick from any recent tour?
I want to reach out to all the folks who have purchased "Signed & Numbered Picks" from me over the last couple of years of Living Colour & Masque tours- I set up a special mail address - vernonsnumberedpicks@mac.com
What I want is for fans to send in pics of the picks so that I can keep track of the numbers and the emails of the owners-most of the people who wrote their email addresses in the logs after the shows are unreadable and I want to keep track and be able to get stuff out to people who win things.
You won't be added to mass e lists, all communication will be numbered pick related and that I'll only ask for a mailing address when necessary from individuals...
Here's what we have so far, please keep 'em coming in. We've sold numbered/autographed picks at Masque shows as well as Living Colour's Collideoscope tour and subsequent tours as well. Again, please send a photo of the pic and number, your name, and email address to :

Did you purchase a signed and number pic on LC and Masque tour? (from Vernon)
I want to reach out to all the folks who have purchased "Signed & Numbered Picks" from me over the last couple of years of Living Colour & Masque tours- I set up a special mail address- vernonsnumberedpicks@mac.com -
What I want is for fans to send in pics of the picks so that I can keep track of the numbers and the emails of the owners-most of the people who wrote their email addresses in the logs after the shows are unreadable and I want to keep track and be able to get stuff out to people who win things.
You won't be added to mass e lists, all communication will be numbered pick related and that I'll only ask for a mailing address when necessary from individuals...
Peace,
V

Steve Jenkins / Vernon Reid / Tobias Ralph Trio - Blue Note NYC May 2nd
Steve Jenkins / Vernon Reid / Tobias Ralph Trio - Live @ Blue Note NYC - Friday May 2nd - LATE NIGHT
FEATURING:
Steve Jenkins, bass
Vernon Reid,guitar
Tobias Ralph, drums
Steve Jenkins/Vernon Reid/Tobias Ralph trio
Steve Jenkins, Vernon Reid, and Tobias Ralph are three musicians who are in the same musical universe but have never played together in this combination until now. One glance at some of the names in each person’s bio and one can see how much their musical backgrounds overlap. The music that these three make is an intense reflection of a vast array of influences ranging from funk, electronic music, jazz, metal, and free music.
Steve Jenkins has been involved with music since the age of three but found his instrument when he discovered the electric bass at age 13. In the fall of 2004, right before relocating to NYC, Steve released his first solo album; the critically acclaimed "mad science". Some of the musicians that he has performed or recorded with include : David Fiuczynski’s KIF, Screaming Headless Torsos, Vernon Reid, Masque, Ingrid Michaelson, Corey Glover, DJ Logic, Eric Krasno, Stephanie McKay, Adam Deitch, Steve Hunt, and current Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen.
Vernon Reid is probably best known for leading Living Colour. He founded Living Colour in New York City circa 1985 and piloted the band through a successful career that continues to this day. He also has a prolific session output in a variety of contexts. He has played live or on record with the Roots, Eye & I, Mick Jagger, Rollins Band, Spearhead, Public Enemy, Mariah Carey, Tracey Chapman, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Don Byron, Defunkt , Santana, Bernie Worrell, MC 900 Foot Jesus, B.B. King, Madalyne Peyroux, Meridiem, Jack Bruce, Terry Bozzio, and DJ Spooky among many others.
Tobias Ralph was born and raised in New York City. A child prodigy, Tobias began playing the drums at the age of 4 years. He has developed his own creative, innovative style as he has combined the influences of many different types of music.Tobias has toured the US, Europe and more with a wide variety of artists including: Michael Cavanaugh, Defunkt, Screaming Headless Torsos, Nena, Tony C and the Truth, 24-7 Spyz, Duncan Sheik and many others.
