Living Colour - Aug 30, 2007 review/setlist - Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo review 30th August

OK, we all know how great the guys are on stage. But
this time was awesome!!! I got the feeling that I´ve
never heard Corey´s voice that good.

The band tried to start with Desperate People but
Corey´s mic wasn´t working. They started again and
then Will had some problems. The guys looked at each
other and decided to skip that song, so the real first
song was Type.

That was followed by a sequence of smash hits and
Corey was a sort of firestarter. He was wearing a Che
Guevara t-shirt by the way.

The new song is great. Corey said with a little
sarcasm "this is a new song, that will be on our next
record, as soon as we record it". If the other songs
will be as surprising as Bless Those, I dare say that
the new album may be better than Collideoscope.

The setlist (if I remember the sequence correctly):

Type/Police and Thieves
Middle Man
Funny Vibe
Wall
Open Letter
Sacred Ground
Memories Can´t Wait
Papa Was a Rolling Stone (amazing version!)
Glamour Boys
Elvis is Dead
Bless Those
Go Away
Desperate People (now it worked!)
Time´s Up
Love Rears Its Ugly Head
Cult
Sunshine Of Your Love
Should I Stay Or Should I Go

RIP HILLY KRISTAL

Hilly Kristal, the founder of legendary New York punk-rock venue CBGB, died Tuesday from complications from lung cancer at age 75.

Not only was CBGB's a landmark to NYC and the music world as a whole, it provided a first stage for many bands. Among them were The Talking Heads, Blondie, The Ramones and four cats from Brooklyn and the Bronx who called themselves Living Colour. Hilly's contribution to the music world can hardly be summed up in a few brief paragraphs. His life long love of music and musicians can never be replaced and he will be sorely missed. Hilly and CBGB itself are now a fond memory but to know that the man and the place at least once existed brings a smile to our faces.

Rest in Peace Hilly. We miss you Brother.

Peace, CG

Another amazing show in front of 1500 Argentinian fans.
Over two hours of set.

Corey Glover was brillant.I think the whole band is now playing better than ever.

Before "Go Away" Vernon Reid said to the audience:"Thanks for your support all over the years,we appreciate it".The band came to Buenos Aires since 1993.

There were fantastic versions:"Open Letter(To a Lanlord)"(FANTASTIC)
"Bless Those"(I really like that one)
"Elvis Is Dead"(During this song Corey Glover sung a part of "Unchained Melody")
"Flying"(Superb;Corey sung Seal's "Crazy",just like last friday.Wimbish bass solo is out of this world).
"Sunshine Of Your Love"(Unbelievable, trust me. Vernon's guitar solos for this song were fantastic).

A great show.A great band.

Living Colour - The Roxy - Aug 24th 2007 - review

I have attended all Living Colour presentations since 93, when their third album has just arrived, and I can tell you that like happened to wines, they keep getting better through time. I have recently watched their DVD Live at Soul Cafe in Philly, so I expected a quiet, more like jazzy set versions...Thank god I was totally wrong!!

First the place, I never been at the Roxy before, it’s like an old theater that looked small but allowed almost 1500 people in. I was with my friend Owal; we share more or less the same musical interests, and see the music in the same way.

I had to queue for about an hour before doors were opened, and people outside looked in the age range from 25-45, some girlfriends looking with faces like "'I don’t know who they are, what am I doing here...". My VIP ticket I was at the first floor, where the VIP section was, and I was in the left side, near Vernon and his 25 pedals, effects and MAC, From my spot I can easily see all the band, and I assume I’m getting older, I couldn’t stand the 3 hour mosh I was watching in the main floor. The place was packed, ACDC sounded as intro played by sound techs.

Allow me a small digression. about tech gadgets. I wanted to record the show with my mp3 player, but I was smart enough not to empty it before going to the place, so I had to improvise with my cell phone, taking a few low quality pics, getting a few low quality videos and catching a few low quality audios, consisting in 50% static, 30% crowd roaring, and 20% band. While I was doing this I regretted several times not erasing the players file. Furthermore Owal had his Minidisk broken, so we are now searching for vids in You Tube and someone in forums who could have record this show...

Ok...let’s move on, thanx for the LC page on the set list I will start the show review with the main points alternating songs from the set list:

The band entered, Corey sporting a black racing jacket, they started with 1-Should I Stay Or Should I Go, people went nuts, the sound was far beyond expectations, and the crowd sang with Corey and banged onto each other during chorus. To me from the place I was watching, it was like seeing a soup of noodle people jumping and bumping while LC music boiled the water.

Then without stopping 2-Type/Police & Thieves came followed by 3-Middle Man and my personal favorite number one 4-Funny Vibe. I could see joy in people’s faces, and the band was feeling it as well. I believe they like the fact people reproduce each chorus and guitar parts, and you could read many lips following Mr. Glovers performing, singing.

5-(Doug Wimbish intro) Wall
6-Sacred Ground/Jam
7-(Vernon Reid intro) Memories Can't Wait
8-Papa Was a Rolling Stone
9-Glamour Boys
10-Go Away Another personal favorite, Owal told me his technique in this song is called "Popping" and "Plucking" but it hasn’t got a definite name. It should be named FQF "Freaking Quick Fingering".
11-Bless Those was a really funky song, I am glad Doug was singing, he knows how to. Let’s hope he tries in some song in next album.
12-Ignorance is Bliss
13-Flying/Crazy/Jam This was other emotional moment. That song is really meant to reach everybody’s hearts, even from those that didn’t understand the language.
14-Jam (Vernon Reid y Will Calhoun) I remember Vernon playing with his solo band in La trastienda a couple of years ago. At that time he was with someone who provided the effects. Now he was doing its own thing in the laptop, setting the scene for Wills 15-Drum Solo One of the top moments from the show, Will played insanely. It was like he grew a pair of extra arms, and funk his way during a 10 minute performance, with moments of hi tech effects and plain and pure Drums.
16-Love Rears its Ugly Head I really dig Vernon playing the small extract from the wedding march. I told him Happy Birthday in one of the silences, but I don´t believe he heard me. My intention was make the crowd sing that, but I didn´t insist.
17-Time's Up
18-Cult of Personality Honorable mention to crowd chorus here, they sang the song, the chorus the guitar part, and gave some love to Corey when he stood up near the front row. In 1993, people didn’t allow him to come back; this time...they behave nicely.

----------------------------------

I don’t know if they had prepared 19-Elvis is Dead/Hound Dog as a replay, but when they re-appeared people start shouting ELVIS IS DEAD in a way that Will provide some drums and it was like being in a Disco, dancing. Rest of the band danced as well. And they provide a really out of the chain version of Elvis is Dead finishing this bold set with 20-Should I Stay or Should I go for a second time.

Bless you LC, you are the greatest Rock Band, you made my life better with that show. It took me an hour to go to sleep; adrenalin was filling me back home.

Hope you play here another time, with new record, and I wish the Obras DVD from 2004 is out soon. Record labels, companies and every one of you that profit with bands COME ON, FANS NEED THAT KIND OF MATERIAL.

Peace
Rod

Power of Soul with lines of What's Your Favourite Colour

The show was attended by an eight-year old boy, who was offered an excellent place on stage by Dennis - cool! The band had an extended foto shoot with this boy after the show.

The band dedicated Flying to a friend whose name I couldn't figure out-sorry for that. Corey did lines like "I need music over my head" and "bring me to the river/wash me in the water" if I figured out correctly. Don't know whether these lines are from lyrics. At least the latter sound religious.

Living Colour - 6 questions - Thanks Fanch!

Thanks to Fanch !
www.myspace.com/fanchbigouden

1 – Last year, « The Very Best Of » was out, and lots of people discovered the band and your music. Was it your your main wish ?

Will Calhoun : Yes

2 – You will in Europe and in France in July at "Le New Morning". Will we have some new songs on stage, or some new mixes of your old songs ?

WC - A combination of both new and old.

3 – A the beginning, you were the first band playing some Rock Fusion. Did you consider that you really invented and created a style of rock music ?

WC - No...we were not the first, if you listen to Hendrix, the Isley Brothers, Parliment Funkadelic, the Chambers Brothers, and many more, you will realize we were not the first. Living Colour is influenced by Hip-Hop, Hard Rock, Dub, drum-n-bass and many other forms of electronic music, Afro-Cuban/Latin music- the Blues, Jazz, Harmolodic Jazz, etc. Our style is heavily influenced by the African American Pioneers who created the music for the World- and the music we grew up listening to in our daily lives.

4 – What about "The Black Rock Coalition" ? Could you explain us the role of the association, and your partnership with them ? YOU SHOULD LET VERNON REID ANSWER THIS QUESTION SINCE HE IS ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS.

5 – Now, LIVING COLOUR is back. So, what about your own and solo project now Is it stopped ?

WC - No we are always working on music....you can visit...www.myspace.com/nativelands or www.willcalhoun.com for my updates. When Living Colour releases a new product the new project will be our main focus, and our side projects will take a back seat.

6 – At last, when will you record a brand new album, and when will it be out, please ?

We began full time writing/working on new music in Aug. 2007. We started on a few ideas during the Spring. We are not certain when the product will be released and how, the music industry has changed; we are looking into the best possibilities to get our music to people.

Thanks them for me. have a nice day. Take care.

Jam with lines of What's Your Favouite Colour

Half an hour before kick-off, only two hundred people or so were present. I was embarrassed, though I could imagine such a show-up at Helmond (of all places) during holiday season. To my relief, the venue was rather packed during the show, which was announced energetically, and the crowd was responsive.

The band was on steam (It's Saturday, do you wanna party?) and they played great. Especially Corey doing fragments of American skin gave me such a weird feeling. Firstly, the words "you get killed just for living" during this 9-11 song Flying. Secondly, my remembrance of the 2001 show @ Cologne. That night, the band performed the full song, building it up layer on layer, and apocalypsing with Will hamering 41 times on his drums and Corey crying on stage. And with him many people. After the song, ALL people were quiet - no more "we want more's". Never had such a serene moment in my life before.

Furtermore, the improvisation on Papa was a Rolling Stone was some kind of serious joke, since it was Mick who pushed the band. And I had difficulty in sorting out the intro of Sacred Ground. It might as well have been In your Name, too, though Nader got it right ;-)

After the show, the band came out to sign the dvd and Will's new cd+dvd Native Lands. And for a chat! Oh boy, what a night :-)

Peace, René

The list had the Cult Of Personality and Tomorrow never knows as encores, but the band didn't go of stage but went straight into COP, the show was running a bit late, and then went of stage, only to return and surprise with extended What's your favorite color jam.

Guys were having a lot of fun, but must have been running out of ‘steam’. Probably from jetlag. Will flew in just hours before the show.

The show was recorded from the first row by a photo camera, so you can expect some close shots but distorted sound, since V was loud as always J

I'm catching their show in Bluesiana (Austria) on 11th and I'm hopping they will have their live DVD as I would really like to get my hands on a signed copy.

Play it loud!

Rocker slows down to be in 'Superstar'

Corey Glover is probably best known as the lead singer of hard-rocking band Living Colour, the group that won back-to-back Grammys for Best Hard Rock Performance for "Cult of Personality" and "Time's Up."

The video for "Cult of Personality" still gets a lot of hits on YouTube.com. Glover is seen in bright yellow T-shirt and shorts, his braided hair swinging wildly as he pounds out the lyrics.

Glover is now making his national tour debut as Judas in the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar," opening Tuesday at the Peace Center for the Performing Arts in Greenville.

The musical penned by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice includes the classic songs "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Everything's Alright" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him." Set in two acts, it tells the story of the final seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. It earned five Tony nominations.

Ted Neeley, who received a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Jesus in the Norman Jewison film version of "Superstar," plays Jesus in the touring production.

Glover, who has been with the tour for nine months, called from a tour stop in New York. He said he'll be with the tour for six more weeks and is still deciding whether to join up again when it resumes in the fall.

Question: Did you audition, or did they come after you?

Corey Glover: They found me and offered me the part. I did sort of have to audition, but the part was mine. It's a really a long, convoluted story which I have not figured out how to work into one sentence. They called looking for me. The producers saw me and I met with Ted (Neeley), and I've been doing this ever since.

Q: Why did you want to play this part?

CG: I've always wanted to do this part. This sort of formed my ideas on being a rock singer. It formed my ideas on doing music. I saw the movie when I was a kid and it changed my life, and I've always wanted to play this part.

Q: Is it a character you can sink your teeth into as an actor and as a singer?

CG: Absolutely. It's got everything I'm looking for. I just feel like it does all that stuff. My life has been music and acting, so now I'm doing it and doing it with Ted Neeley, and it's amazing.

Q: Were you able to put your own stamp on the character, or did they give you a guideline on how to portray this part?

CG: The story is really humanizing the Passion play, and you have to look at it in those terms. If you were in this situation, if you knew somebody who you thought his head was getting big and feeling bigger than he was, wouldn't you want to pull him back and say, "Look, this is getting a little out of hand," which is basically what the Judas character is doing, and people villify Judas as a betrayer. But if you look at him as a human being and not as just evil incarnate, you'll see he had a very human idea. If you were put in that same situation, you would probably act the same way.

Q: How has your work with Living Colour helped you in this role?

CG: To me, it's all the same: Music is theater, and theater is music. This is life. I try to deal with it like how I live. It's all a part of the process of living. When I sing with Living Colour, I use my acting abilities, and when I act on stage, I'm using my singing abilities, so it's all together.

Q: This is your first national touring production. Is it different touring with a Broadway show than touring with a rock band?

CG: It is the same, and it's different at the same time. We are on the road, and that's my life. My life has been on the road. With Living Colour, we'd go out on the road for a month or a month and a half and come home for a couple of days and then go out again. With this production, we go out and don't come home, which is very different.

Q: What are your plans after the tour ends?

CG: Living Colour is going to go out on the road for a couple of weeks, and we're going to go to Europe and South America. We're making a record, and we have a DVD that is coming out of some live shows. We are going to put out another DVD probably at the beginning of next year. And there should be an album out next summer.

‘Superstar’ to light up stage

"...Though Glover, 42, has acted since he was a teenager, filming commercials and performing in children’s theater, he is probably better known as lead singer for the hard-rock group Living Colour. The group earned Grammys for Best Hard Rock Performance of 1989 (“Cult of Personality”) and 1990 (“Time’s Up”).

Glover also starred as Private Francis in “Platoon” (1986) and as Ty in “Reunion” (2001), as well as Peter on the 2001 TV series “Signs of Life.” Glover, who lives in New York City, said in a telephone interview he would return to work with Living Colour on its new album, “The Chair in the Doorway,” when “Jesus Christ Superstar” ends its tour in June.

While Glover is touring with “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Glover said other band members “make their own music individually. Some work individually writing and producing music.”..."

Rock star relishes role in 'Jesus Christ Superstar'

By Troy Reimink
The Grand Rapids Press

"Jesus Christ Superstar" created a stir upon its 1971 stage debut, largely because of its sympathetic portrayal of Judas.

Corey Glover, who plays Judas in the "Superstar" touring production, likes to think the musical was instrumental in changing how people see Christianity in general, and the relationship between Judas and Jesus in particular.

"I think it was a catalyst," Glover said, calling from a tour stop in Arizona. "I've always had sympathy for Judas. He's been painted with such broad strokes. He's a man that saw the world in a particular way.

"You look at the songs and books that are coming out these days, and there's been a humanization of Judas and Jesus and the whole story," he said. "You look at a song like 'I Don't Know How to Love Him' (sung by Mary Magdalene in "Superstar") -- that's 'The Da Vinci Code!'"

Glover made his name singing with the rock band Living Colour, known for its hit "Cult of Personality." Since August, he has been touring with "Superstar," the Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera dramatizing the last seven days of Jesus' life.

Rock star to theater star has been a natural transition for Glover, who began his showbiz career as a stage actor before joining Living Colour in his early 20s. He had been in commercials and plays, and he appeared in Oliver Stone's "Platoon" in 1986, a year before Living Colour signed its major record deal.

"It's all theater," he said, noting how he used his acting skills to craft the magnetic stage persona he used in the band. "All this stuff is really just acting."

Theater was his first love, and "Jesus Christ Superstar" was one of the first musicals that really caught his attention.

"I saw the movie when I was a child and was enamored with it. I saw Carl Anderson and said, 'I could do that.'"

He was right, but he had big shoes to fill. Anderson was famous for his portrayal of Judas and died in 2004 of leukemia. Before that, Anderson suggested Glover would be good for the role. Two years later, it happened.

Glover said he has been honored to work with Ted Neeley, who played Jesus in the 1973 film version of "Superstar" (for which he earned a Golden Globe) and other Broadway incarnations. This go-round is billed as the farewell tour for Neeley, 63.

"He's incredible and still doing it incredibly well. I'm very grateful," Glover said.

The easy part, he said, is being part of a large touring cast, rather than having to lead a rock band every night.

After breaking up in 1995, Living Colour reunited in 2000 and released an album in 2003. Glover said he has been working on new music for the band while touring.

"We're in the works doing a new Living Colour record as we speak."

Vernon Reid's Budda Head from the tour

Vernon Reid's myspace - deleted!!??

Please re-add Vernon Reid's official myspace to your friends list to all Living Colour/Vernon Reid/Masque fans. The space was deleted for an unknown reason. Please be patient while content is being added. 3 new photos from the recent FEb 2007 European Tour were added. If you kept up w/ V's blog (which is lost now), he found a Buddha statue head for 50% off sale early in the tour and had fans autograph it. See the before and after!

cheers!

Vernon from Vienna on myspace blog

First of all I have to shout out Slavisha & Marleen for coming out to Regein tonight which is gig one of Masque's euro run... We had a lively chat about guitars, technology, and our current "War Without End". Slavisha and is a myspace friend and Marleen is his lady... They make a great couple... The band sounded great for a first tour show. we added an alt rock classic to the setlist; a version of Only Shallow by My Bloody Valentine. The best part is that the friend who turned me on that incredible album Loveless was there; the guitarist, sound-designer, composer, and emerging novelist Jimmy Lee! Also we had an extraordinary guest artist join us on stage; Thereminist Pamelia Kurstin, who's a friend of Masque's keyboard and Samchillian mad scientist Leon Gruenbaum, http://samchillian.com/ sat in on National Anthem and a groovy Sci-Fi dub version of Flatbush & Church. She is haunting, lyrical, and awesome-check her out here-http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=59787403

On a sour note, Leon's laptop was stolen out of his hotel room the night before the show! Horrible. We suspect an inside job. The police came and left, with little hope of catching the crook before we leave tomorrow for Worgl Austria. Fortunately, I just happened to have brought my second laptop, which has the software Leon uses on the gig (Live, Reason). It sucks that this happened and I hope that the creep that did this to Leon gets caught. And Soon. If you get to any of the Masque shows step up and say hello!

Goodbye for now,

Vernon

There never really was a rivalry between Living Colour and the Spyz

Feb 26, 2006 - Dennis Diamond chimes in to debunk the 24/7 Spyz vs LC rivalry.

"There never really was a rivalry between LC and the Spyz.

That started when there was a show at the Ritz (now Webster Hall in NYC) that Living Colour headlined. The Spyz were originally slated to be on the bill (which was on a Saturday). However, the Spyz had another gig earlier that week (Wednesday) at the same venue, and the Ritz' management chose to bump them (I think Vivid was a month away from release, or came out that month (April 1, 1988, if you're wondering...);LC didn't have that kind of clout to do that, and they wouldn't if they did. Folks may have had a problem with the blow-up dolls, but that wasn't the reason).

Then, in Thrasher magazine, in an interview with the Spyz, it was stated "we don't like them", referring to LC. No reason was given specifically (I still have the mag; gotta dig it up), which would give the impression of some sort of beef. I remember everyone was bummed about it, cause no one knew where that came from.

A few months later, in San Francisco, both bands happened to be in the same town at the same time. The Spyz had come by soundcheck (I think it was at The Stone), and whatever misunderstandings there were, they were addressed and all was cool.

If you really think about it, there were no bands from the '80's era BRC that did extensive touring with LC (except for Sinister Dane; they did about 6-10 dates). A lot have had opportunity for a few here and there, but not a full tour.

Now you know the whole story!"

What the Godfather of Soul Meant to Me

Vernon Reid, solo artist and founding member of Living Colour

''I would tell you that in discussing James Brown, thinking of him as the 'Godfather of Soul', while convenient and familiar, is a very shallow way to appreciate what he did. It's much easier to underestimate what James Brown did than to overestimate it. I mean, he literally changed the form of the music! Funk music as we understand it starts with James Brown. We always had groovy, danceable R&B prior to that, but if you think about the evolution from 'Please, Please, Please' to 'Super Bad,' it's extraordinary because the whole time, he was paring away elements to get to a pure, truly African-American music. He's a true American minimalist.

''I think lyrically he gets short shrift because no other artist synthesized the dynamics of the male-female sexual relationship like James Brown. The song 'Sex Machine' is outrageous because it literally brings to mind the mechanics of sex but it's ambiguous and says nothing. It's up to you to picture what a 'sex machine' is.

''He exemplified the notion of 'call and response' and his 'call and response' was with an entire community. So when he [says] 'Say it loud,' it's deep. That song, 'Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud,' is a totem of a social movement; it's as powerful as [Marvin Gaye's] 'What's Going On.'

''He's a giant in American music, and as an entertainer, he's unbelievable! When you think about the arrests and the things like that, the unfortunate thing is that they overshadow the enormity of what he accomplished musically. He had a tumultuous life but in the balance of things, he gave much more than he took.''
