James Blood Ulmer and the Memphis blues Band featuring Vernon Reid

Tony Award-winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson will be joined by a number of fellow actors, as well as musicians, for the performance event "August Wilson and the Blues," which will be held at Battery Park's Castle Clinton National Monument on Saturday, September 9th at 7 PM. The show, which will be directed by Santiago-Hudson, is free.

Joining the actor, who is currently directing Signature Theatre Company's production of Wilson's Seven Guitars, will be actors Rosalyn Coleman, Ebony Jo-Ann, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Bill Sims Jr., and Keith Randolph Smith, as well as musicians James "Blood" Ulmer and the Memphis Blues Band featuring Vernon Reid. The cast will perform excerpts from Seven Guitars and other Wilson works.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, who passed away last October, is known for his ten-play chronicle of the African-American experience in the twentieth century; the cycle also includes such plays as Fences, The Piano Lesson and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Signature will also present Two Trains Running (starting in November) and King Hedley II (starting in February) as part of its Wilson celebration season.

Seven Guitars, with original music by Sims, stars Kevin Carroll, Cassandra Freeman, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Brenda Pressley, Lance Reddick, Roslyn Ruff, and Charles Weldon.

"August Wilson and the Blues" will be presented both as part of Signature's Wilson celebration and the River to River Festival.

Santiago-Hudson won a Tony Award for his performance in the original Broadway production of Seven Guitars. Other New York appearances include Gem of the Ocean, Jelly's Last Jam, and the one man-show Lackawanna Blues (he also appeared in the film version). Other films include The Devil's Advocate and Shaft, and he has appeared on "Law and Order" and "The West Wing."

An Esoteric Night—A Benefit Concert for Tom Terrell

On September 11, Giant Step will host “An Esoteric Night—A Benefit Concert for Tom Terrell” at the Canal Room in Brooklyn. Ndegeocello, Angelique Kidjo, and Living Colour founder Vernon Reid are among those scheduled to perform.

Terrell, a stapple in the music industry since the early eighties, was diagnosed with cancer this Summer. Like many in the music business, Terrell does not have health insurance. To alleviate the burden of mounting medical bills, Giant Step is donating 100% of the proceeds from this event to The Tom Terrell Benefit Fund.

Terrell is not a household name, but the Ft. Greene veteran has left his mark. He has deejayed at clubs and on radio stations, appeared as a commentator for NPR, and contributed to a host of publications, including VIBE.

note from Vernon Reid and Living Colour "special edition"

We're in Budapest, Hungary and so far it's been great. I have renewed respect for both Doug Pinnick and Corey Glover... Doug is awesome with a lean feral presence and power with a very different take on the songs. We also do King's X's Looking For Love. Having said that I do miss Corey. These are his songs...We don't do Glamour Boys or Landlord. No Point. Doug's take on Love Rears is fresh though! Corey's passion and power in the LC context is not replaceable. But that was never the point of this. It was at Corey's suggestion that we looked for someone to fill in for these conflict shows and it was my idea to ask Doug Pinnick. King's X is arguably the best band we ever toured wit, and Doug Pinnick is an incredible vocalist and bassist. It's honor to share the stage with him.....All in All a great experience Doug's take's on Go Away and Ignorance Is Bliss rival Corey's in their power. The fans have been wonderful as well. All the shows have been fun. We had an outrageous show in Amsterdam at the Paradiso! Looking forward to this show today at the Sziget fest on the same as Iggy Pop and Prodigy....!

Love, Peace, and Release,

Vern

So far things are getting better for me, yeah I was a bit nervouse, LOL! Amsterdam? I had a blast!! I felt more comfy there and I knew the words better, its hard to own someone elses words, but hey! I am up for the challenge, Zoetermeer,I realy felt almost totally comfortable...we drove all night and all day to Budapest to tomorrows show at a festival with Iggy Pop and Prodegy... the rock goes on, and this has been a wonderful experience for me so far,.. I stopped smokng weed for this tour and after years of smoking my voice is gettng back to normal, the way it was before i started smoking in 1987..( I still eat brownies thoug LOL!) .I never realized how much smoking fucks your voice...I am so glad I got this gig and was I stopped, singing is fun again and the passion is returning..I love doing one r the other (bass or vocals) and I this has helped me to concentrate on singing, this has been so
good for me! thank you LC!!!! yeah bootlegs?! the soundman is recording all the shows, we plan on putting them up for download (at least thats what Will said.. so you guys will get to hear something..I now I will have them all and you know me, I cant keep nothing to myself, LOL! .thanks for your love and support...may the goove be with you....dUg. ps, for give my bad spelling....

This gig was even better than Paradiso's. Everybody seemed in a good mood. Vernon was joking continuously, culminating in a Crosstown Traffic improvisation. Guess he waited for an Hummer tour bus ;-) However, the crowd was a bit mild - maybe the magic of the Paradiso venue was missed, or people were tired or had a stiff neck from the previous show! BTW: Middle Man seems spelled with Vernon breaking a string, after Doug's mic problems...

I was unfamiliar of any of Kings X material, but was treated to a rapid and inspiring education by Mr Doug Pinnick as all were.If any at all were disappointed with the abscence of Corey Glover, they soon forgot their anxieties as Mr Pinnick gave his whole heart. Those who were priveleged to make his acquaintance were met with a warm, gracious and wise soul!!! Mr Pinnick, market your face cream because you are no where near your 56 years!!!

In all, we were reminded of why Dougalow(Mr Wimbish), Will Calhoun and Vernon Reid are A REAL BAND, that get's better if that is at all possible. After the show, they mingled and shared their experiences, musicianship and love. Most well celebrated musicians would not give us mere mortals the time of day, but they did!!

note - it's called Bless Those

Doug P. had a tough start - firstly he (accidentally?!) broke the mic-stand, next during Middle man, his mic got disconnected :-( During the show, he grew. Although Doug had to check lyrics from time-to-time, he had the exposure of a front man and I got the impression he was enjoying the show very much. It was good to see the support of the other band members. But with Corey's absence, the threesome had even more space for excellent improvisations and solos :-)

Peace, René
