American hard rock band Living Colour broke onto the scene in the late '80s with the hit Cult of Personality, which attacked our fascination with celebrity and analysed the rise of political leaders.
The band will perform the Grammy award-winning song in Sydney this week as part of its spontaneous whirlwind tour - at a time when the public's fascination with celebrity has reached saturation point.
"That song is not so much about the people, but the energy that creates the attraction, the fame and the popularity," says drummer Will Calhoun.
"The world right now is in the age of mediocrity … Imagine if singers like Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye had an opportunity like American Idol?" Calhoun says. "Great talent comes from breeding talent, but these days it's easier to buy a computer and become a producer than it is to go out and learn an instrument …"
The band, whose hard rock sound was styled on Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone and Santana, signed to Epic records after being discovered by Mick Jagger, but split in 1995 after four albums. It reformed for 2003's Collideoscope, which incorporated hip hop, drum 'n' bass, and indigenous sounds and addressed issues such as land rights, immigration and 9/11.

Hard rockers back for on-the-fly gigs

American hard rock band Living Colour broke onto the scene in the late '80s with the hit Cult of Personality, which attacked our fascination with celebrity and analysed the rise of political leaders.
The band will perform the Grammy award-winning song in Melbourne this week as part of its spontaneous whirlwind tour — at a time when the public's fascination with celebrity has reached saturation point.
"That song is not so much about the people, but the energy that creates the attraction, the fame and the popularity," says drummer Will Calhoun.
"The world right now is in the age of mediocrity … Imagine if singers like Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye had an opportunity like American Idol?" Calhoun says. "Great talent comes from breeding talent, but these days it's easier to buy a computer and become a producer than it is to go out and learn an instrument …"

With only a week's notice, the band chose to play three consecutive nights at the Metro Nightclub. It is the first time a big-name artist has played a series of spontaneous shows in Melbourne since Prince's 2004 tour. And the band's old fans will be hard-pressed to find something more entertaining this week in Melbourne.
"It's good for both of us," says Calhoun. "For the artist, it's good to show up in front of an audience at short notice, on the fly. We can't take anything for granted — we don't have posters all over town, the radio's not playing our new record — so we've just got our live show to impress people.
Living Colour play the Metro tonight and tomorrow.

Legendary New York hard rock band Living Colour is coming to Australia and they’re coming soon.
In fact, next week if you live in Melbourne or Sydney you can check out the band that changed the face of rock ‘n’ roll in the 80s and did for black musicians what Jimi Hendrix did in the 60s.
Living Colour came along at a time when rock was segregated, and together with Bad Brains, who formed just a few years earlier, showed the world once more than black musicians could play rock ‘n’ roll.
It didn’t hurt that Mick Jagger produced their first demo, which earned them a worldwide record deal with Epic.
If you want to see just how hard the eighties rocked, get down to either of the following venues next week:
May 16 – The Metro, Melbourne
May 17 – The Metro, Melbourne
May 18 – The Metro, Melbourne
May 20 – The Roxy, Sydney

Vernon Reid and Masque - Other True Self 3 1/2 stars
With Vernon Reid's inescapable status as the leading African-American metal guitarist, Other True Self is the exact medicine his Black Rock Coalition is asking for. Rather than be content to play in the studio behind a predominantly Caucasian hard rock scene, Reid comes forth on his third post-Living Colour record exploring and progressing his wide-ranging influences. The transitions from punk to metal to R&B are seamless throughout the instrumental tracks, which defies genre at every turn. The price for such inventiveness in each movement is jaggedness between tracks, as the album becomes shapeless in the long run. That cost, though, is worth it if the listening is done on a track-by-track basis. When Reid covers Radiohead's "National Anthem," it's not audacity that fuels the move, it's respect between artists and Reid branching out, yet again, from his progressive rock to encapsulate another genre on this diverse album. That hits on alternative, whereas Reid touches on hard rock with opener "Game Is Rigged" and places his own spin on traditional African music on "Oxossi." More overtly, Reid harkens back to his Brooklyn upbringings in "Flatbush And Church Revisited," a piece that does the best job encapsulating his all-encompassing style than any other on the album, flowing seamlessly from reggae to arena rock to jazz. That he manages to incorporate so many styles of music in at one point or another makes Other True Self a compelling listen, even if it lacks consistency.
