CD Review: Living Colour - Everything is Possible: The Very Best of Living Colour
Do you ever revisit a band that you hadn't listened to in a long time, and when you do, do you start to notice things that you'd never heard before? That's what listening to this Living Colour album was like for me.
Living Colour's first album, Vivid, came out back in 1988, just around the time I was getting into music. I know, later than most, but at least I discovered it, right? Anyway, I really liked this album and the 1990 follow-up, Time's Up. But, as my lack of musical focus attests, my attention drifted to other pursuits. Over the years my tastes have widened somewhat, and my ear has changed. Whether or not that makes me any better a judge of music has yet to be seen. Back to the CD, before I get too sidetracked.
Everything is Possible collects the best cuts from their five albums, plus one from a soundtrack. The two albums with the largest representation are those classic first two, with 11 of the 17 songs. Something else I like about the disk is that it has the tracks in chronological order by album. I've never particularly cared for when songs aren't put in order; one of the best things about greatest hits collections are listening to a bands' progression, or lack thereof.
We begin our tour through Living Colour's history with their biggest hit, "Cult of Personality." The song starts strong with a defined riff progression, and backbeat that you can't help but get sucked into, then the powerful, clean vocals come in over top of everything, tying it all together. From there we move on to the somber "Open Letter (To a Landlord)" and the attack on yuppies with "Glamour Boys."
The highlights of Time's Up are "Pride" and the title track. Included amidst the originals are a couple of cover songs, Jimi Hendrix' "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" from the album Biscuits, and a rather heavy version of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" from the True Lies soundtrack. Closing the album is a soul/hip hop remix of "Love Rears its Ugly Head," a song that originally appeared on Time's Up.
Listening to Vernon Reid's guitar wizardry was absolutely eye-opening for the entire run. I always recognized him as an exceptional player, but listening with the experience I have amassed over the years, I hear a player who is clearly one of the best out there. He can sustain heavy riffs, play blazing solos, and switch styles at the drop of a hat. Add to that the jazzy, funky rhythm section of Muzz Skillings on bass, and later Doug Wimbish, and William Calhoun on drums. Last but not least is the amazing voice of Corey Glover, delivering lyrical commentary with conviction and soul.
Listening to all of these songs again for the first time in a long time, I am amazed how well they hold up. The music does not feel dated; this could be released as new and blend in with the current musical landscape. Living Colour's fusion of rock and metal with jazz, funk, and blues becomes a truly original sound.
Bottomline. This is a great set that showcases the talent that this band possessed. For anyone looking for some driving rock with a dash of originality, and lyrical content which is still relevant to the current climate, this is a good place to start. I know there must be a lot of younger rock fans looking for something more, this would be a good place to start.
Highly Recommended

Vernon Reid
“Masque is about identity: Who am I? Really, that question has informed everything I’ve done, from the beginning of my solo career.” Vernon Reid is speaking one recent morning as his band bus idles outside the hotel. The night before, of course, anyone in the crowd would have had no trouble answering his query: He is, among other things, a profound instrumentalist, one of the world’s great guitarists — a player so advanced, in fact, that the estimable Robert Fripp has admitted to aspiring to meet Reid’s standards “as a guitarist, musician, and human being.”More than that: He is also a visual artist, who at this point was spending every spare moment with his laptop, finessing the digital works to be displayed right after Christmas in a New York gallery. He’s a poet and essayist, a film composer, a father and husband. But like all the music he has played — with his first, two-time Grammy Award-winning band, Living Colour, on sessions with artists ranging from Carlos Santana to Public Enemy, Mariah Carey to the Ramones, in solo projects and countless live appearances — Other True Self, the second album by Vernon Reid & Masque, on Favored Nations, is more about search than discovery. The title says it. In fact, the titles Reid attached to all of his own work, beginning with his solo debut Mistaken Identity and continuing with the first Favored Nations Masque CD, Known Unknown, outline a journey of self-discovery that’s well underway but far from over.

Living Colour won't repeat past, except for its latest retrospective
Friday, January 20, 2006
Gary Graff
Even though Living Colour's latest release is a retrospective -- "Everything Is Possible: The Very Best of Living Colour" (Epic/Legacy) -- guitarist Vernon Reid says what's keeping the band together these days is a desire not to repeat the past -- or even think that much about it.
"I'm very clear in my own head you cannot fix the past," Reid says. "Every band is its own little militia. Every militia has its own history, its own heroes and villains. But we're in the here and now. It's an interesting place to be."
After busting out of the New York-based Black Rock Coalition thanks to the patronage of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and 1988's multiplatinum album "Vivid," the quartet put out three more albums before splitting in 1995. Living Colour reunited in 2000 and released a new album, "Collideoscope," in 2003.
"Everything Is Possible" features hits such as "Cult of Personality" and "Glamour Boys," plus a remix of "Love Rears its Ugly Head" and a rare cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love." Nowadays, Reid says, the band members are "more willing to be real about real things. I would say my relationship with Corey Glover has been the best it's ever been with the lead singer. We all understand what it means to be dedicated to this band again."

Introduction:
Gigantic ArtSpace [GAS] proudly presents Artificial Afrika, an exhibition that considers contemporary artistic appropriations of African visual culture through mythology, religious traditions, musical forms, and other culturally-specific practices. The exhibition's scholarly and artistic contributions deconstruct myths and inventions to challenge the validity of images that continue to define the idea of Africa, an idea often rife with thoughts of disease, poverty, and corruption. It is through this lens that the exhibition will consider a variety of cultural and artistic forms that not only represent ideas of the past, but more importantly, contribute to the evolving social transformation of the present.
Two of the main techniques used by the artists in the exhibit are irony and humor. For me this irony is the technique of using the tools and materials of the "Western World" to tell the story of the "African World," two supposedly separate technologies, even universes, that have, in the telling of an accurate history, really cross-fertilized and enriched each other for centuries. The humor that is used is borne out of the international African experience. It is a humor that can be quietly reflective, subtly revealing and ravagingly accusatory. - C. Daniel Dawson
Participating artists include: Richard Admiral, Willie Birch, Guillermo Brown, Sonya Clark, Renee Cox, Stephanie Dinkins, Ze Frank, Victor Gama, Michael Harris, Satch Hoyt, Jack Kirby, William Parker, Patricia Payne, Vernon Reid, Alison Saar, Kevin Sampson, Eneida Sanches, Dread Scott, Accra Shepp, Yinka Shonibare, Xaviera Simmons, and Charles Stone.
A full-color, 32-page catalog with contributions by C. Daniel Dawson, Vernon Reid, Robert Farris Thompson, and Greg Tate will be available.

Vernon Reid & Masque's "Other True Self" Continues Versatile Musician's Journey, Set for Release on Favored Nations on April 18
Vernon Reid is scheduled to tour in spring and summer.
Sherman Oaks, CA (PRWEB) January 20, 2006 -- Vernon Reid, one of the world’s great guitarists and a legendary exponent of the New York downtown music scene, has finished work on the second Vernon Reid & Masque album. Titled "Other True Self", it is his third “solo” album in all. The self-produced CD is set for April 18 release on Favored Nations Recordings.
Reid, who has just returned from U.S. and global tours with his mothership group Living Colour, will look to the spring and summer for U.S. tour dates with Masque, his band of accomplished New York players.
On "Other True Self", he exposes a vivid personal landscape. Each track illuminates one or another side of Vernon Reid: his African lineage in “Prof. Bebey,” the Latin flavor of the melodies he casts over Hank Schroy’s bass pulse and Don McKenzie’s crisp reggae rhythm bed in “Flatbush and Church Revisited,” the exhilaration of his unison sprint with keyboardist Leon Gruenbaum on “Game is Rigged,” the swirling Middle Eastern energies in “Mind of My Mind.”
In addition to many new Reid originals, the album features material written by Masque band members. Gruenbaum contributed “White Face,” a heavy, wall-of-guitar rocker in a slow 6/8, while McKenzie created “Kizzy,” a slow-turning mobile of glittering sounds. Schroy wrote the enigmatic and abstract “Oxossi.”
Speaking of Masque, Reid says, “Chemistry is so important. When you’re around great musicians, it can improve what you do. Leon, for example, pushes me because he’s such a phenomenal musician. He brings out the best in me. Now, when you can have wonderful musicians who fight for every scrap of space, the music will feel like that. But there’s also something to be said about spending time with that challenge. Playing at a high level is a challenge. And when the guys in the band all enjoy what the other guys are doing, that can create something fantastic.”
The album also offers three cover songs: The Tony Williams Lifetime’s “Wild Life,” Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” and Radiohead’s “National Anthem.”
In his life outside the worlds of Masque and Living Colour, Reid has busied himself with scoring. He just completed work on the Lions Gate film “Five Fingers” starring Laurence Fishburne. He also scored the forthcoming PBS documentary “Almost Home” and a soon-to-be-released horror film, “Shadow: Dead Riot.”
Reid was also an omnipresence at the recent New York Guitar Festival. “My relationship with the guitar is not ambivalent at all,” he states. “After having played it for so long, everything I do now comes down to getting the body, the mind, the heart, and the ear to all work together. I know I can execute certain things with more finesse, but what counts more is that my playing is tied completely to the moment I’m in.”
And on "Other True Self", the moment is worth sharing.
