Back to the '80s with Living Colour

World Cafe Live concertgoers took in a few chapters of black rock history Friday night. For the packed house, a mix of young and old, folkish and funky, it was a real page-turner. The belt-it-out soul grind of newcomer Danielia Cotton gave way to three hours of amazing musical dexterity from the recently regrouped Living Colour.

The buzz surrounding Cotton, from Hopewell, N.J., is already pretty high, and for good reason. Her album, Small White Town, is full of honkytonk rock/soul that's part Tina Turner, part Melissa Etheridge.

The stunning Cotton, backed by three-piece band the Pistoleros, tore through album tracks "Pride" and "It's Only Life" before bringing down the house with the suddenly ironic "Back in Black" by AC/DC.

Living Colour's marathon session (more than 14 songs) wore everyone out.

The rock foursome - whose late-'80s hit, "Cult of Personality," seems to ring more true as time passes - kept eyes and ears popping as it ripped pages from its back catalog.

Opening with "Memories Can't Wait," off the first album, Vivid, vocalist Corey Glover, stand-out guitar player Vernon Reid, bassist Doug Wimbish, and drummer Will Calhoun reminded everyone of their considerable talents.

Glover's voice sounded as soulful as it did years ago, losing none of the emotional commitment required for such rock ballads as "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" and "Time's Up," one of the many politically charged tracks that have stood the test of time.

Reid's playing is a must-see, and even then you'll blink and miss about six or seven notes. Wimbish's and Calhoun's solos dabbled in electronic wizardry, with the bassist leading the band through the new backwoods soul track, "Either Way."

CORPORATE ROCK - Living Colour and other troubled investments

CORPORATE ROCK
Living Colour and other troubled investments

By J.R. Taylor

It is wiser to pledge loyalty to, say, the products of RJR Nabisco than any kind of rock act. It doesn’t matter who’s running Nabisco. The frontman could be James M. Kilts, Ross Johnson or Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Fans of Nabisco can still trust that the company remains dedicated to bringing the consumer a constant supply of tasty cookies, quality cigarettes and other fine consumer goods.

In contrast, rock bands only build up equity to tear themselves apart.
Living Colour is a good example. Their first album, Vivid, was a fine initial offering back in 1988. Corey Glover was a dynamic and soulful vocalist in a field dominated by whiny art students. “Middle Man” and “Cult of Personality” were shameless hard rock with an intellectual veneer, while the band’s sheer musicianship provided their lesser songs with innovative underpinnings.

And while it was absurd to treat the band as a gimmick, the music press kept pretending like it was a big deal for a bunch of black guys to be performing rock music.

And yet Living Colour couldn’t move units after the initial hype. Their 1990 album Time’s Up was a boneheaded attempt to be an unthinking man’s Public Enemy. It was smart to target the idiocy of the college-rock market, but the melodies were as dopey and shrill as the politics. By this point, Living Colour had also established a reputation for outsized egos and petty infighting.

If somebody had been running Living Colour like a business, there would’ve been an intervention by stockholders, or maybe a purging, or some uprising to get the members to acknowledge impending disaster. Warners seemed content to have a catalogue item like Vivid. The label kept the band limping along with the Biscuits EP, which mainly highlighted the splintering band’s weaknesses—although the rhythm section of drummer Will Calhoun and Muzzy Skillings seemed grateful for the chance to show off their skills to prospective new employers.

There are, of course, times when music fans would benefit from rancor. It’s been sad to see REM staying together for the sake of their corporate alignment. The lucky member got an aneurysm and early retirement. The unlucky fans had to feign excitement for a band that continues to lack any enthusiasm of its own.

The main problem is that a rock band doesn’t care if its product suffers once the brand has been established. Nabisco has to make sure that there are always fresh new batches—with consistent quality—of Oreos and Winston Lights out on the shelf. (They’re even always on the lookout for brand extensions such as Oreo Big Stuff and Ready-to-Spread Oreo Frosting.)

REM fans, for further example, didn’t get anything that good. They got Pete Buck running off to play with every band in Seattle, and Michael Stipe producing disappointing films like Velvet Goldmine. The back catalogue isn’t going to go stale, so nobody cares about the music. Nobody cares about REM’s audience, either. They all went stale back in 1993.

Established musical acts have it easy. But Living Colour—remember them?—weren’t that established. Nobody really noticed when the band dissolved after 1993’s Stain, which was mainly notable for how new bassist Doug Wimbish wrote the album’s sole decent song.

Of course, there are certain corporations that deserve their demise. (We should all be grateful for never having to suffer through another flight on TWA.) Living Colour, however, would prove that they deserved to win back consumers when they reformed in 2001.

The band wisely took their time before finally reemerging with the unlikely greatness of 2003’s Collideøscope. For starters, the album includes what remains the only great song about 9/11, written from the view of an actual victim of terrorist douche-bags. The album also benefits from the maturity of musicians who are no longer trying to steal the show from each other. Among other things, this spares us a lot of forced funkiness.

And Living Colour isn’t just cashing in with the kind of holiday show that aging acts throw together so they can buy their kids some new iPods. This concert marks the end of a proper tour—which included a smallish venue in Nashville that was probably the same club they played back when Vivid was starting to break. Sat., December 17, Irving Plaza, 17 Irving Place, (at E. 15th St.), 212-777-6800; 9, $40/$35 adv. n

Living Colour interview W/ Uncle Daddy's Smokeshack

"I (Chris 'Uncle Daddy Longlegs' Czynszak) recently had the opportunity to speak, via telephone, with Living Colour frontman Corey Glover. Living Colour, as many of you know, gained popularity in the late 80's with the breakthrough rock track, 'Cult of Personality' from the album 'Vivid'. The album was co-produced by Mick Jagger which led to the band opening for The Rolling Stones. They went on to play at the innaugural Lollapalooza Tour. They have since released numerous albums, broke up in 1995, and reformed in 2003 for their latest album, 'Collideoscope'. Living Colour will be performing at The Exit/In this Friday, December 7th. I'd like to thank Corey Glover & Hard Head Management for allowing this interview. Enjoy!"

Living Colour @ Town Ballroom small review
thanks jboogiee (from the soulive boards)
"As far as Living Colour I have been a fan of them since their debut album Vivid-never seen them live til last night & they got busy-Vernon Reid shreds the guiatr & is very underrated, Doug Wimbush is a talented bassist & what a hell of a setup he had-Will on the drums gets busy & corey's vocals are dead on-as far as some songs on their setlist, here are some of them, not in order:

Memories
Time's Up
Open Letter To a Landlord
Love rears It's Ugly Head
Middle Man
Funny Vibe
Flying
Cult Of Personality

They played more but those are the 1's I can think of off the top of my head."

Living Colour With Daniella Cotton

Saturday, December 3, at the Beachland Ballroom.
By Duane Verh

Published: Wednesday, November 30, 2005

Living Colour's 1988 debut, Vivid, is precisely the sort of release music writers hail in retrospect as seminal. The cross-breeding of rock, funk, and hip-hop so common nowadays can find a key piece of its beginnings in the path cut by four black New York City rockers, whose balls-out sound, built around the wails of guitarist-bandleader Vernon Reid, developed concurrently with the big town's burgeoning hip-hop scene.

Much of Living Colour's lyrical content mirrored rap's growing sense of street politics, and Vivid included a collaboration with Public Enemy' s Chuck D. and Flavor Flav. The band's high-octane brew was also laced with first-rate pop instincts, evidenced by tracks such as "Glamour Boys" and the band's signature tune "Cult of Personality." Vivid went multiplatinum, snagged a Grammy, and kicked off a run of five releases and much praise from fans and critics, which lasted till 1995. A reunion in the new century resulted in 2003's Collideoscope. The band updated its electronics, and while it emerged more lyrically pessimistic than ever, was sly enough to cover "Back in Black." And Reid's side projects since then have proved he's still a monster.

Singer Corey Glover, center, of the band Living Color performed last week at Mo Pitkin’s on Avenue A at a benefit for Carrie Beehan, a member of the Federation of East Village Artists whose leg was seriously injured in an accident during the HOWL! I'm trying to finish up work on a soundtrack to a movie called Five Fingers for Lion's Gate Starring Laurence Fishburne...Yohimbe brothers goes to finland for a festival and heads to South america for a quick run in November. Valley's own film fest competes with best

By JOHN BARRY

Five days, one city, one town, many movies and much music. From Sept. 28 through last Sunday, the Hudson Valley was exploding with the arts and culture. From films and music staged by the Woodstock Film Festival to various concerts, this five-day stretch offered many reasons why so many people love living in the area and why so many other people travel here to be stimulated on a cultural level.

Here are the highlights:

# Kicking off the film festival Wednesday was a concert at the Bearsville theater featuring the drummer and bass player for the 1990s band Living Colour. Joining them was keyboard player Bernie Worrell, the subject of a film festival documentary. The rhythm section sounded like a cross between a NASA spaceship and an octopus playing drums. Worrell looked like a shaman who had just stepped out of Willie Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

Vernon Reid guitar pick contest (repost)

this post was taken from the yahoo group SACRED GROUND; basically, if you or anyone that you know bought a numbered/signed Vernon Reid pick from the Collideoscope tour please read cafefully!!!

*The deadline is being extended until Monday, October 10 @ Midnight
Eastern Time (Sunday night, to be specific...)

Hello All,

I've just gotten off the phone with Vernon. We had a conversation regarding the signed picks that were sold in 2003 and that we never had a contest because of the illegibility of the list.

Well, that's all about to change!

If you (or someone that you know) has purchased the pick AND can send me (off-list) a (clear, meaning signature and number MUST be legible; no exceptions! This is how we'll verify ownership.) JPEG of the pick with your name, email and shipping information, Vernon will randomly pick three entries.

The first place will receive one of Vernon's personal effects pedals (autographed), in working condition. The second and third place will receive an autographed promo CD.

Note: The pedal and CD choice will be made by Vernon.

As we plan on doing this again in the near future (with a better registration method), we are going to set the deadline for this contest for Sept.30, 2005 at 11:00 PM Eastern Time. Any submissions after that will not be accepted. The winners will be notified via email within the following week.

SO... Go dig out those picks and make it happen!!!

Best of luck to ya!!!

Peace, Diamond

Wednesday, September 28th : woodstock film festival

Bernie Worrell and the Strangers will perform at the Bearsville Theatre at 8:00 PM for the opening night concert. Special guest appearances include Danny Louis of Gov’t Mule and Doug Wimbish and Will Calhoun of Living Colour.

BERNIE WORRELL & THE STRANGERS
featuring Will Calhoun and Doug Wimbish

Bernie Worrell & the Strangers with special guest appearances by Gov't Mule's Danny Louis and Uncle Funk featuring: Joe Beesmer, Jesse Gress, Pete Levin, and Jerry Marotta.

BERNIE WORRELL & THE STRANGERS

Living Parliament? Funkadelic Colour? We're not sure what it is, but it rocks. With a backbeat provided by resident stampede impersonator, Will Calhoun, and a groove from Doug Wimbish that is deeper than the needle's made on your Physical Graffitti vinyl, Bernie Worrell flies anywhere and everywhere on his magic carpet woven together from waveforms of all creeds and colors. Is it possible that three people are responsible for all of these sounds? Yep, they're guilty.

It wouldn't be too farfetched to call Bernie Worrell the Zelig of funk. Back in the day, he was alongside Clinton, Bootsy and everybody else who was in the deep funk of things as the musical director of Parliament Funkadelic. Throughout the years, he's popped up time and again--like an ivory-tickling, versatile Waldo--in the most intriguing places: performing with musical outfits like Bootsy's Rubber Band and Mos Def's rap-rock supergroup Black Jack Johnson; collaborating with the Talking Heads and eventually ending up in their magnificent concert film Stop Making Sense; and backing up every rapper to come out of the West Coast (in sampled form, of course). Now that he's on tour with his own backup crew, the Strangers featuring Will Calhoun and Doug Wimbish of Living Color, folks can rest assured that, in these less-than-funky times, there is still one man out there who is willing to deliver the funk--by any means necessary. Corey Glover on upcoming Soulive cd

Jazz/rock trio Soulive has inked with Concord Records for the Sept. 13 release of its next album, "Young, Hungry and Groovin'." The group was previously signed to Blue Note, which capped its tenure with the late March retrospective "Steady Groovin'."

The 15-track new album features such guests as Robert Randolph on a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Crosstown Traffic," Living Colour vocalist Corey Glover on "Freedom," Chaka Khan on "Back Again" and Ivan Neville on "Take It Easy" and "Got Soul."

"Young, Hungry and Groovin'" is Soulive's first studio album since a 2003 self-titled effort, which debuted at No. 5 on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart.

The group will be on the road throughout the summer, including a show on June 24th with Antibalas as part of New York's Celebrate Brooklyn festival. Soulive will also play at the Shakedown Campout and Music Festival in North Plains, Ore., alongside Galactic, Medeski Martin & Wood, Michael Franti and Sage Francis, among others.

CBGB's Favorite Colour

By David Schultz

Halfway into Living Colour's Friday night set at CBGB's, Corey Glover belted out the opening lines to Open Letter (To A Landlord), perfectly encapsulating the populist undercurrent of this month's benefit shows to save the legendary punk club on the lower east side of Manhattan:

Now you can tear a building down
But you can't erase a memory
These houses may look all run down
But they have a value you can't see

2 hours and 15 minutes of great rock!

On a related note, Muzz Skillings was in the house! We all saw him just stroll up casually and stand in line. Lots of fans took a double take! And Muzz was extremely friendly w/ whomever gave him a shout etc. It was great to see Dennis and Muzz as well as Corey talking before the show and running into Doug Wimbish on the way to the gig. According to a fan from the Sacred GRound board, they asked about Muzz's band "Medicine Stick" and supposedly a website is in the works. Stay tuned!

Who was the DJ @ CBGB's that spun right before Living Colour took to stage?

- "Andrea Clarke, who also has a radio show on WBAI. She's great at what she does, but that night she was on fire! And it was a first for her; she's never actually spun onstage before, with a crowd watching her; usually someplace more obscured, but she did great"

Hello All,

I'm in Buzios, near Rio with Masque. The show is tonight, and by the vibe here, it should be great (we've already been here two days). Tomorrow we head to Sao Paolo for three more shows (next weekend). If I get hold of a setlist, I'll put it up when I get online.

Colourful Comeback (summerfest review)

Rock fans may not have been clamoring for a Living Colour reunion with the same fervor as they were for, say, a Motley Crue reunion. But the New York City-based quartet—which quietly got back together in 2001 after a six-year absence—marked its first Summerfest appearance by closing the curtain on the Mountain Dew Rock Stage Sunday night, managing to sound more vital and relevant than most current rockers.

Relying on its unconventional blend of socially conscious funk, punk and metal, Living Colour infused almost half of its loud and raw 15-song set with music from its classic 1988 debut Vivid, including show opener “Memories Can’t Wait,” “Open Letter (To A Landlord)” and the smash single “Cult of Personality.” Three songs from the band’s 2003 studio album, CollideØscope, fit in well with the earlier material.

Singer Corey Glover’s voice still hits the high notes but also delves deeper for the occasional death-metal growl. Wearing a short, orange Afro and a military-fatigues jumpsuit—he later got overheated and shed the top portion after humorously acknowledging that he “completely overdressed for this gig”—Glover demonstrated he hasn’t gained any greater sense of fashion since he wore a fluorescent green bodysuit for the “Cult of Personality” video. Guitarist Vernon Reid, meanwhile, proved the chops that helped make Vivid such a memorable musical statement were no fluke. At Summerfest, he often channeled Jimi Hendrix, making his guitar squeal and cry, and punctuating his performance with a soulful and stabbing solo on “Flying,” a CollideØscope track that was the night’s most mellow, moody and melodic song. Reid dedicated it to people who are “being killed unnecessarily” all over the world—a fitting tribute from a band that still cares about such things.

Note from Vernon Reid

New summary

Yohimbe Brothers just finished a quick euro-tour. It was great; we hit Austria, Germany, Holland, and Slovakia...We were primed to do our UK gig. We arrived the day of the bombings terribly sad and tragic. And yet, the courage of the londoners we met was inspiring!

LC just did a great show in Milwaukee. We're going to play CBGB's on August 5th for maybe the last time...No Joke

Masque is doing dates in Brazil from the 22nd to the 30th badass Steve Jenkins is going to be filling in for Hank Schroy, who'll be on tour with Martin Luther.

re: the CBGB's date, as per LC's management : "not confirmed yet. But LC is doing CB's the last month, we're just hammering out dates."

keep checking CBGB.com for official date
