ALL AGES!

The Black Rock Coalition proudly presents The Million Man Mosh: A Benefit For Donovan Drayton. The show will feature two of New York City's most beloved bands gracing the same stage for the first time: the Grammy-Award winning group Living Colour and heavy metal soul pioneers 24-7 Spyz. Hip-hop founding father Afrika Bambaataa will do a DJ set, and there will a late jam with special guests including legendary guitarist Ronny Drayton. There will also be information on rare memorabilia that will be up for auction. Proceeds for the event will go to the legal defense of Donovan Drayton, son of Ronny, who has been incarcerated at Riker’s Island for four years without a conviction.

As the flagship band of the Black Rock Coalition, Living Colour fused free jazz, funk, hard rock, and heavy metal into a sound that is uniquely its own. The band's debut album Vivid was released in 1988 and contained the hit single "Cult of Personality," which won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. The band's followup Time's Up (1990), garnered more critical acclaim and another Grammy Award. After an extended hiatus in the late '90s, Living Colour reformed in 2000 and released Collideoscope in 2003. Having recently released the critically acclaimed album The Chair In The Doorway (2009), the band is currently preparing material for a new album and tour in 2012.

South Bronx natives Jimi Hazel (guitar) and Rick Skatore (bass) formed 24-7 Spyz ("twenty-four-seven spies") in 1986 and developed an immediate following based on their musical versatility. The group mixes soul, funk, reggae, and R&B with heavy metal and punk - a mix that came to be labeled as heavy metal soul. 24-7 Spyz broke up in 1998 after releasing several albums, including Harder than You (1988), Gumbo Millennium (1990), and the cult classic Strength in Numbers (1992). Reforming in 2003, the group dropped Face the Day (2006), its latest release and first album of original material in over a decade. 2011 saw a reunion of the Strength in Numbers lineup at a show in New York City, and that lineup will tour Europe in the first quarter of 2012. The band is now writing songs for a new disc that will be released in 2012.

Guitarist Ronny Drayton, who has been a sideman for a virtual who’s-who list of New York’s brightest music stars (Roy Ayers, Melba Moore, James “Blood” Ulmer, Nona Hendryx, Defunkt, Edwin Birdsong, Kashif, The Family Stand, and more), will close out the night jamming with both bands and special invited guests.

Note to Shiprocked passengers, fans, bands and crew

It comes with deep regret, but unfortunately we must cancel our Shiprocked cruise experience. Vernon Reid was involved in an early morning bike accident, dislocating his finger, chipped tooth, and facial lacerations. Swelling has not gone down enough to freely move his fingers. Please read this account from Vernon :

(On Nov 4th)…I started my ride at about 4:10 am. The streets were nearly devoid of cars, I saw a single truck & 1 other car at the start of my ride. The next car I saw was at the bottom of a long hill coming around a curve I’ve never liked, either driving or riding, the junction of Cebra St, St Paul’s St, & Beach Street; a semi-blind corner. I was going down hill north on Cebra, and the car, a dark sedan, was coming south, up Beach, curving onto St Paul’s. The car’s trajectory was Not Good. My attempt to escape what looked to be an even worse head-on collision avoided hitting the car straight on, but put the bike down hard, and had me bellowing in pain on the ground. My pain turned to panic when I pulled off my padded Izumi bike glove and saw the horribly wrong angle my ring finger on my fretting hand had taken. My head also made direct contact with the street, cracking a tooth, and bruising my face.. The car had three sober, twenty-something young men, who called 911.

My wife Gabri had gotten me a newer, better helmet than the old top- of-the head suburbanite model I used for years. That helmet maybe saved my life. The CAT scan was positive. My finger was dislocated, not broken or fractured, which is a miracle-after popping it back in, the x-rays showed my skeletal finger in straight alignment. My ER doc, Ben Kavinoky was heroic, staying on 2 hours after a brutal 12 hour shift. So much of what happened positively at the hospital was At the insistence of my wife Gabri, who insisted on getting the best doctor on the floor for me. Gabri got that call from the cops no spouse ever wants to get. She wasn’t just a trooper, she was a marine. She got a trusted neighbor to watch over our daughter Idea, then rushed to the ER, and made it back in time to get Idea to school without freaking her out. I’m VERY lucky.

Over the course of the last 10 days I’ve been dealing with treatment & it’s options, assessing the seriousness of my injuries with my doctors.-I had every intention of pressing forward, & playing the cruise, having cancelled all other pending events-the possibility of playing was initially not discounted, but the pain & swelling has turned out to be persistent, albeit improving day by day. I HATE not playing for you guys, & will miss hanging out with so many great bands! Shift Happens. And Thank God it wasn’t MUCH much worse!

I hope you all have a great time! We WILL see all of you very soon!

Peace,

Vernon Reid

Corey Glover need your help to make his next solo record

http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/coreyglovermusic

This is from a recent email sent from Corey Glover :
...I'm writing again to ask you to help fund next solo music project via Pledgemusic:

http://pledgemusic.com/projects/coreyglovermusic

In September and October, I had a tour w/ the talented Danielia Cotton. It was a small east coast tour, roughly 10 shows, with 2 more after Thanksgiving in Fairfield, CT and NYC's Highline Ballroom. I talked w/ a lot of folks pre and post shows for feedback, what they like, and what they're looking for in my next album. It's been 13 yrs since my last solo record. I've had 2 albums w/ Living Colour since then (minus the Paris Concert CD/DVD) and have played and toured w/ Soulive and Galactic. It's definitely time to make that follow-up to Hymns.

I'm asking for your help funding this album. With your help, you can tell me what you want to hear. Through Pledgemusic, I'll have updates of the progress and will answer your feedback. the minimum pledge is $10, which will get you the full album via digital download, plus access to pledge-only downloads and videos.

You can also pledge on signed cd's, a collection of mp3's from my personal archive of music and shows, to handwritten lyric sheet of any song you'd like all the way to a private in-house show for you and 30 friends (US and around the world).

Thank you if you've already pledged. You can still help by spreading the word of this project on your social networks: http://pledgemusic.com/projects/coreyglovermusic or tell your friends.

This project also gives to a charity of my choice. I've worked w/ the students at NY2NO ( http://ny2no.org ) a youth-led consensus-based organization made to create a network of young people who are interested in organizing and mobilizing across NYC. They work in solidarity w/ those affected by social, racial and economic inequalities in New York and New Orleans.

I'm sitting here backstage at Stubbs BBQ in Austin, Texas performing w/ Galactic tonight, so I best get going. Again, I appreciate everyone's help on this.

Thanks for you help!

Corey Glover (finally) a follow-up to Hymns

http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/coreyglovermusic

I’ve finally had time to think, write and conceptualize the new recording. It’s been a while since “Hymns” was released, and it’s time to come out guns blazing. New lessons of love and life have helped shape this idea, including thoughts and ideas I’ve had writing/touring w/ Living Colour, Galactic, Soulive, Family Stand, etc…This IS a follow up to “Hymns.” Through my PledgeMusic campaign, you’ll be able to get some tasty unreleased treats that I’ve never made available as well as get the new album the second it’s completed…stay tuned!

I’m also giving a portion of the funds collected to an organization called NY2NO – www.ny2no.com – a youth-led, consensus-based organization made to create a network of young people who are interested in organizing and mobilizing across New York City. NY2NO works in solidarity with those most affected by the social, racial, and economic inequalities in both New York and New Orleans. Through this, the youth break down barriers and work together to combat racism and classism while moving towards an egalitarian society.

Can’t wait for you to hear the new music, hope you can join me here at PledgeMusic!

Much love,

Corey

You know Corey Glover's powerful voice. Corey is the lead singer and one fourth of the pioneering, Grammy winning, platinum selling rock band Living Colour. The steps Corey took to reach this point in his career are well known. As a founding member of Living Colour, Corey helped prove that not only could black guys kick out the jams, but that they could be embraced by a vast expanse of fans. Living Colour earned numerous industry awards including back-to-back Grammys for Best Hard Rock Performance of 1989 ('Cult of Personality') and 1990 (Time's Up) and emerged as one of the most influential rock acts of all time: regularly selling out arenas and selling millions of albums. As vocal proponents for black self-reliance and pride, they broke down more than their fair share of musical barriers and served as role models for other black bands who had their sights set on hard rock recognition.

But that is only a portion of his musical journey to date. In 1998, Corey released his debut solo record, Hymns, to much critical acclaim. He's been featured on records around the world as a premier vocalist, acted in motion pictures including the 1986 Best Picture Platoon, performed theatrically onstage in such shows as Jesus Christ Superstar and toured extensively with funk-rock legends, Galactic.

Corey describes his music away from Living Colour; "I always wanted to do rock stuff and I did. But I've always wanted to be a loveman and sort of split the difference. I think I've done that with this album (Hymns) and with this band."

The level of performance Corey Glover delivers with this solo effort is unmatched and inspirational; it's sure to entertain you and leave you feeling good.

“Corey Glover has never sounded in such great voice, his fine balance of fiery howl and sugared croon, giving the group their powerful Hard Rock heft..." - BBC

“Glover mixes cool crooning with some of the old raging sound he is famous for, to create an eclectic blend of music." - CNN

Growing up in Hopewell, New Jersey, Danielia Cotton stood out. Danielia's natural gift - raw, searing vocal chops combined with a deep, buttery tone - draws from the two different traditions she absorbed early in her youth. On the one hand, she couldn't get enough of AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones. On the other hand, she was her mother's girl: daughter of a jazz singer and member of the church gospel choir, grooving to Mavis Staples, Etta James, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.

The happy collision of these two traditions blossomed into a successful and acclaimed music career. Danielia's 2009 disc, Live Child - a companion piece to her 2008 studio album Rare Child - won Best Live Album in the 2009 Independent Music Awards. Danielia has toured with Lilith Fair, BB King, Heart, Robert Cray and many of rock's biggest names. And, Danielia relishes her independence as well as her eclecticism.

Danielia Cotton's sound is a savory dig in the early '70s, when the twin powers of rock and soul came together to form a harmonious funk that satisfied the spirit as it thrilled with slashing electric guitars. As a singer and arranger, Cotton has a refreshingly uncluttered style. Cotton brings a freshness to the soul-rock formula, not to mention a contagious fever that is near irresistible.

“... an honest-to-God voice with real power, conviction, emotion and soul.” — Boston Herald

“Cotton's raspy holler atop such tightly messy hard rock is genuinely funky stuff, like a cross between Thin Lizzy and Sly Stone” — Chicago Tribune
